There are many skateboarding enthusiasts out there who prefer to build complete skateboards with everything they always wanted. Others will usually opt for cheap complete skateboards to save a little money. While this may certainly work out to be a more affordable way of buying a skateboard, it is important that you understand how to build a complete skateboard and what is needed for the process so you end up with a high-quality product.

Of course, you need to consider the height of the skateboarder as well as how big the skateboarder’s feet are. Both factors help to determine what size skateboard you should make. Somebody with larger feet will obviously need a wider skateboard deck. Once you have determined that basic statistical information, you need to ensure you get your hands on the following components:

Skateboard wheels — you can get skateboard wheels in a wide range of colors, sizes as well as degrees of hardness. It just depends on what you are trying to accomplish. Most skaters are satisfied with wheels that range from 52 mm to 54 mm and with a hardness of 99A. And, of course, you can choose wheels based on the kind of activity you want to do, for example speed skating, transition skating or cruising.

Bearings — these are the little metal rings that fit inside your skateboard wheels. As a note, the more precise the skateboard bearing, the weaker it usually is. Therefore, in order to get bearings that are both precise and durable, try looking for one that is between 3 and 5 on the ABEC rating.

Skateboard trucks — these are the axle-style parts that connect to the bottom of the skateboard deck. The width of your skateboard truck should match the width of your deck for optimal performance of your board. On the inside of the trucks are the bushings which control the stability of the skateboard. If you are a newbie at skateboarding, consider getting bushings that are a little stiffer, because soft bushings require a lot of control.

Grip tape — this is the sandpaper type layer on top of the deck that helps to give the rider of the board more grip.

Hardware — the basic nuts and screws that are responsible for keeping the board together are important if you are considering making your own skateboard from scratch.

Making your own complete skateboard is a great idea if you have the time and the technical know-how. It is really a straightforward process once you know the parts that are required for making a good skateboard.
